Step 1: Purchase quality chalk is committed to supplying you with the best quality product, designed specifically for chalking your hair.

Apart from the hair chalk all you need is a water bottle, protective gloves, towels, flat iron & hairspray.

Step 2: Prep your hair

Try to wear a towel around your neck or an old t-shirt as it can get messy. Don’t worry it all washes out.

You may want to dip your hair chalk sticks in water first so the colours can attach to your hair easier.

Note: if you’re a blonde, do not wet the hair before chalking unless you want the colour to stay in longer.

Step 3: Add the colour

Apply the chalk to the strand of hair in a downward motion, twisting the hair as you chalk. You can try for a fun ombre look, or just do a couple strands.

Step 4: Let it dry

Whilst you can blow dry your hair, we recommend air drying so that you don't blow off the chalk.

Step 5: Set the colour

Seal the colour in with a flat iron or a curling iron to add waves (if it sticks you can simply wipe it off).

Step 6: Seal the colour

Apply hair spray to seal the colour as a final step.

Step 7: Avoid the brush

After you have chalked your hair, avoid brushing it as you'll make a big mess and lose most of the colour on the brush.

Also, be sure to stay away from anywhere where you might get wet, or your clothes are going to end up covered with chalk.

Step 8: Wash it out when you are ready

The colour will generally last one shampoo. However, if your hair is more porous, such as colour-treated blonde hair, it can last a couple shampoos. Using a clarifying shampoo will remove the colour more quickly.

Handy Tip

If you want something brighter, apply white chalk first and then go over it with the colour you want to make it stand out.

Hair chalking don'ts also offers these cautions when hair chalking.

Don’t apply the chalk with any wax or product in your hair.

Don’t use water on blonde hair if you don’t want the colour to last.

Wear protective clothing ( towel or old t-shirt ) when applying and sleep on an old pillow case as the colour will transfer.

Remember to seal colour with hairspray, if you don’t the colour may rub onto your clothes.

Don’t do this near the water/beach or on a rainy day as the colour will run (on to your clothes).
